چکیده

In evolved supernova remnants (SNRs) interacting with molecular clouds, a highly inhomogeneous structure consisting of a forward shock of moderate Mach number, a cooling layer, a dense radiative shell and an interior region filled with hot tenuous plasma is expected. We present a model of nonthermal electron injection, acceleration and propagation in that environment and find that these SNRs are efficient electron accelerators and sources of hard Xand γ-ray emission. A forward shock of velocity vs >∼ 100 km s−1 with an ionized precursor propagating into the molecular cloud accompanied by magnetohydrodynamic turbulence provides a spatially inhomogeneous distribution of nonthermal electrons. The energy spectrum of the nonthermal electrons is shaped by the joint action of first and second order Fermi acceleration in a turbulent plasma with substantial Coulomb losses. Bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and inverse Compton radiation of the nonthermal electrons produce multiwavelength photon spectra in quantitative agreement with the radio and the hard emission observed by ASCA and EGRET from IC 443. We distinguish interclump shock wave emission from molecular clump shock wave emission; particles reach higher energies in the interclump shock and that is the likely source of γ-ray emission and radio synchrotron emission. Spatially resolved Xand γ-ray spectra from the supernova remnants IC 443, W44, and 3C391 as might be observed with BeppoSAX, Chandra XRO, XMM, INTEGRAL and GLAST would distinguish the contribution of the energetic lepton component to the γ-rays observed by EGRET, constraining the cosmic ray nuclear component spectra in these SNRs. These data would provide a valuable tool for studying the complex structure of molecular clouds where SNR radiative shocks interact with dense molecular clumps. Broad-band nonthermal emission from molecular clouds illuminated by cosmic rays from nearby supernova remnants

Molecular clouds are expected to emit non-thermal radiation due to cosmic ray interactions in the dense magnetized gas. Such emission is amplified if a cloud is located close to an accelerator of cosmic rays and if energetic particles can leave the accelerator site and diffusively reach the cloud. We consider here the situation in which a molecular cloud is located in the proximity of a superno...

Thermal OH (1667/65 MHz) Absorption and Nonthermal OH (1720 MHz) Emission Towards the W28 Supernova Remnant

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT The W28 supernova remnant is an excellent prototype for observing shocked gas resulting from the interaction of supernova remnants (SNRs) and adjacent molecular clouds (MCs). We present two new signatures of shocked molecular gas in this remnant. One is the detection of main-line extended OH (1667 MHz) absorption with broad linewidths. The column density of OH...

Observation of Nonthermal Emission from the Supernova Remnant Ic 443 with Rxte

In this paper we present analysis of X-ray spectra from the supernova remnant IC 443 obtained using the PCA on RXTE. The spectra in the 3 20 keV band are well fit by a two-component model consisting of thermal and nonthermal components. We compare these results with recent results of other X-ray missions and discuss the need for a cut-off in the nonthermal spectrum. Recent Chandra and XMM-Newto...

Searching for galactic cosmic ray pevatrons with multi–TeV gamma rays and neutrinos

The recent HESS detections of supernova remnant shells in TeV γ-rays confirm the theoretical predictions that supernova remnants can operate as powerful cosmic ray accelerators. If these objects are responsible for the bulk of galactic cosmic rays, then they should accelerate protons and nuclei to 10eV and beyond, i.e. act as cosmic PeVatrons. The model of diffusive shock acceleration allows, u...

Flat Spectrum X-ray Emission from the Direction of a Molecular Cloud Associated with SNR RX J1713.7−3946

We report on the discovery of a diffuse X-ray source with ASCA, presumably associated with a molecular cloud in the vicinity of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7−3946. The energy spectrum (1–10 keV) of the hard X-ray source shows a flat continuum, which is described by a power-law with a photon index of Γ = 1.0 −0.3. We argue that this unusually flat spectrum can be best interpreted in terms of ...
